“Following the former Alaska governor’s road show, the author delves into the surreal new world Palin now inhabits—a place of fear, anger, and illusion, which has swallowed up the engaging, small-town hockey mom and her family—and the sadness she has left in her wake.”—
“But a new paper in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research suggests that - for reasons that aren’t entirely clear - abstaining from alcohol does actually tend to increase one’s risk of dying even when you exclude former drinkers. The most shocking part? Abstainers’ mortality rates are higher than those of heavy drinkers.”—
There are more TRIUMF pictures. But Tumblr seems to be falling apart at the seams. So how about some background info?
The machine at the heart of TRIUMF is a cyclotron: they take really fast moving protons (the insides of hydrogen atoms) and fire them into a ridiculously powerful magnetic field. The field makes them spin in a circle and it makes them speed up. The faster they go, the larger the circle gets. When they get going fast enough, the particles leave the cyclotron in a beam and then they use the beam to do cool stuff.
I got to stand on the cyclotron. Well, the machine was about thirty meters down below, through concrete blocks. But the magnetism up there was still strong enough to hole paperclips up on end and make some folks dizzy.
Once the beam leaves the cyclotron it gets directed through the internet a series of vacuum tubes to different experiments. They use magnets to turn the beam in different directions, and they use magnets to focus the beam.
They also use the cyclotron to separate out radioactive isotopes for experiments and for medical purposes. They can treat some kinds of eye cancer right in the lab.
